Go over the
stone stile and follow the path straight ahead. The plantation is privately owned and
covers 37 acres. The house, which is called White Hill House, is situated on the other
side of the wood and was built in 1923 by James Stuttard, mill owner of Sabden. To the
right you will pass a deep hollow where coal was dug to supply the mills in Read during
the first world war. Continue on the path through the wood over a stile into Simonstone -
Sabden Road, where you turn left and walk down to the cross-roads. The wood on the right
is Well Wood and that on your left Shady Walks. As you approach the cross-roads on the
extreme left, in the corner of Robinson Wood, you will notice a derelict cottage. This is
known as 'Gamekeeper Cottage' and was built in 1803. The gamekeeper from the early 1920s
was Dick Moorhouse who worked for James Stuttard at White Hill House. |
