9 miles |
Now proceed up the hill past all the houses and, keeping on the left hand side of the road, walk into open countryside following the wall up to the first gate (you will notice a few small fir trees on the right). Go through the gate and follow the path to go through an open gateway eventually reaching a stile to the right of the farmhouse. The farm is Wilkins Heys built in the 1600s and said to have connections with Whalley Abbey. It was sold by the Huntroyde Estate in 1977. Go over the stile on to a bridle-path and turn left. This is known as the 'Corpse Road' and was used centuries ago by the monks to carry the dead to Whalley Abbey. |
