Money had to be found somehow and ideas for finding it were various. The most entertaining of these was possibly  that which  for a few years became known as "The Annual Duck Race".

Ducks of a plastic variety could be bought from the local newsagents and in due course several hundred of these were released into Sabden Brook and encouraged by fair means or foul to travel downstream. The first few to make it to the winning post earned prizes for their owners and more importantly money for the bowling club kitty..
