Anthony Woodworth

Age 23        Married with 1 child

Private 5278
1st Bn., East Lancashire Regiment

Died of wounds on
Monday 12th July 1915

Anthony was a native of Clitheroe and married a Sabden girl, Miss Elizabeth Devonald in 1912 at St Nicholas Church.  They lived at 44 Whalley Road, Sabden and had one child who was a year old on the day Anthony died.  Prior to enlisting in the East Lancashire Regiment, Anthony worked at Messrs Steiner and Co Ltd, Sabden.

After being in France for only a few months Anthony was severely wounded in the left shoulder and was shipped to hospital in Bury St Edmunds, England.

Mrs Woodworth received two telegrams in as many days, the first stating that Anthony had arrived at Bury St Edmunds on Saturday 10th July 1915 and was dangerously ill.  The second telegram stated that Anthony had died on Monday 12th July 1915, and also asking if Mrs Woodworth would like Anthony to be buried at Bury St Edmunds or his body could  be sent home free of charge.

George's body was brought home and he is buried in the Clitheroe (St Josephs) Roman Catholic Cemetery, Lancashire (in the same grave is also buried Pte J Woodworth, 20115.  6th Bn. Manchester Regiment.  13th January, 1922.  Age 40).

In Sabden he has been remembered  on both the School and Church Plaques.
