Alfred of Whalley Road, Sabden was married and the father of five children, whose ages ranged from two years to sixteen.  He was employed at Sabden's Steiner and Co. Printworks. 

At the outbreak of the war, Alfred enlisted at Clitheroe into the East Lancashire Regiment.  After initial training at a camp in England the regiment was shipped out to the Dardanelles.  Whilst in Gallipoli, Alfred was attached to the 7th Worcester Regiment.  Soon after this Alfred was killed in action. 

Alfred's remains were never recovered and he is remembered on the Helles Memorial, Turkey. 

In Sabden he has been remembered on both the School and Church Plaques.
