Edward was born on Clitheroe Road, Sabden.  His parents, Robert and Elizabeth, owned the village grocers store, previously having been in charge of Sabden Post Office for a considerable time.  When Edward left Sabden County School he worked for his parents in their grocery shop.  The family was closely connected with the Sabden Baptist Chapel.  After Edward’s father died his mother moved to 15 Newton Street, Clitheroe and Edward began employment for the large and well known grocers, Seymour Mead and Company, Newton-Le-Heath. 

On the 29th February 1916, Edward enlisted in the army and after training left for Solonika in August 1916.  In October he contracted dysentery and was invalided to Malta.  He remained in hospital until March 1917 when he rejoined his regiment in the Balkans.  Five weeks later Edward was killed in action. 

Edward Sutcliffe is buried at the Karasouli Military Cemetery, Greece. 

In Sabden he has been remembered on both the School and Church Plaques.
