Rennie was born at his parents', Smith and Sarah Jane's, farm in Sabden.  Along with his two brothers he attended the County School and the Baptist Church.  When Rennie was sixteen he, along with his family, moved to Old Hall Farm, Roughlee, Lancashire.  He began work as a tackler at Messrs Nutter and Holgate, Brierfield and became a leading member of the Brierfield Conservative Club.  Rennie married Marion and they set up home together at 26 Taylor Street, Brierfield where they went on to have two children. 

After first joining the Motor Transport Regiment he was transferred to the Kent Yeomanry spending two years in Palestine before being sent to France.  After fighting in the front line for three months, Rennie was killed in action. 

Rennie was buried at St Venant-Robecq Road Brititsh Cemetery, Robecq, Pas de Calais, France.

 In Sabden he has not been remembered on either of the School or Church Plaques.
