Joseph was born in Manchester and lived with his parents, Charles and Elizabeth, until he married.  In 1915 Joseph enlisted into the army and in 1916 Joseph's wife Ellen and five children moved to 16 Bury Row, Sabden because doctors had advised that Ellen, who was in poor health, needed the clean air of the countryside.

Shortly before the end of the war, Joseph was escorting prisoners from the front to the rear lines when he received a severe bayonet wound to the head.  He spent two months in a Military Hospital before being medically discharged from the army.

Although Joseph appeared fit and healthy, he suffered from seizures due to his head wound.  On the 22nd May 1920 , he had a severe seizure which rendered him virtually paralysed.  On the 1st June 1920 Joseph suffered another seizure which proved to be fatal.

Joseph Moss is buried in St Nicholas's Churchyard, Sabden.

In Sabden he has not been remembered on either the School or Church Plaques.
