William was born in Accrington but his parents moved to Whalley Road, Sabden whilst he was still a toddler.  He attended the Catholic School and Church.  After leaving school William began work at Messrs Steiner and Company Printworks, Sabden. 

In October 1914 William enlisted in the East Lancashire Regiment and after training he was posted to the Gallipoli Peninsula where he was involved in much action but came through unscathed.  In March 1917 William was drafted out to France, going straight into action at the front line. 

On the morning of Friday 30th August 1918 William was killed in action as his regiment recaptured the village of Riencourt from the Germans. 

William is buried at the Manchester Cemetery, Riencourt-les-Bapaume, Pas de Calais, France. 

In Sabden he has been remembered on both the School and Church Plaques.
