Age 25        Married

Corporal 241276
11th Bn., East Lancashire Regiment

Killed in action on
Wednesday 27th March 1918

Herbert was born in Sabden and lived with his parents in Pendle Street West. He attended Sabden County School and St Nicholas Church and Sunday School.  After leaving school, Herbert began work at Moorhouse’s Cycle Works, Padiham.

On January 4th 1915 he enlisted into the army and on his final leave, before being posted out to the East, Herbert married his fiancée, Florence at St Nicholas Church, Sabden.  In April 1915, the couple set up home at 12 St Leonards Street, Padiham.

After fighting in the East for two years, Herbert’s regiment moved to France.  In June 1918 Florence received news that her husband was missing in action. It wasn’t until December that she learnt from one of Herbert’s friends, who was a returning prisoner of war, that he had seen Herbert killed by an exploding shell.  She later received an official telegram confirming that Herbert had been killed in action on Wednesday 27th March 1918.  Mrs Lyons later moved to Diggle, Oldham and married a Mr Dunne.

Having no known grave, Herbert Lyons is remembered on the Arras Memorial, Pas de Calais, France.

In Sabden he has not been remembered on either the School or Church Plaques.
