Arthur was born at his parents' home in Padiham Road, Sabden.  He attended the Catholic School and Church.  After leaving school Arthur began employment at Messrs Steiner and Company Printworks, Sabden.

Arthur was a member of the Sabden Band, and he went on to play for Whalley and Great Harwood Bands. 

In 1911 Arthur married and set up home at 21 Mercer Street, Great Harwood and moved jobs to work at Oakenshaw Printworks, Clayton-le-Moors, Lancashire. 

Shortly after the birth of his first child, Arthur was called up into the army, and because of his reputation as an excellent cornet player, became a bandsman in the East Yorkshire Regiment. 

Whilst serving in Bermuda Arthur contracted pneumonia and passed away in a military hospital.

Mr Lofthouse was buried at the British Army Hospital Cemetery, Bermuda. 

In Sabden he has not been remembered on either of the School or Church Plaques.
