John was born in Read, Lancashire and lived with his parents in Fort Street .  When he left school he worked at the Blackburn shop of  the Argenta Meat Company.  John was a member of the Sabden Brass Band.  

In July 1917 he joined the South Lancashire Regiment and was sent respectively to Rhyl, Whitchurch, Oswestry, Barrow and Park Royal, Woolwich where he was transferred in to the Army Service Corps.  

John contracted pneumonia and spent two weeks in hospital at Woolwich where he died on the Monday 11^th November 1918 .  

John’s body was brought home and he was buried at Read ( St John ) Churchyard, Lancashire .  

In Sabden he has been remembered on both the School and Church Plaques.
