John lived with his parents,Thomas and Jane, and his brother in Pendle Street East, Sabden. They attended the Roman Catholic School and the family regularly attended the Catholic Church.  After leaving school John began work at Sabden's F. Steiner and Company Printworks. 

On 20th October 1916 John and his brother enlisted into the army and were both sent out to France in January 1917.  The brothers were involved in vicious fighting on several occasions, each time both coming through unscathed.  In April 1918, Mr and Mrs Hodkinson received an official telegram stating that their eldest son, John had been killed in action. 

John’s body was never recovered and he is remembered on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Comines-Warneton, Hainaut, Belgium. 

In Sabden he has been remembered on both the School and Church Plaques.
