The news of William's death reached his parents Ann and Joseph Hartley and his friends in Sabden from his wife, Ellen of 1375 Bordeaux Street, Montreal, Canada.  William, his wife and his children emigrated to Canada from his native Sabden when he left the army in 1898.

William had served 12 years in the British Army and had been involved in the war in South Africa fighting in the Battle of Spoin Kop amongst others.

On the outbreak of the Great War,  William at once enlisted in the Canadian Infantry and was immediately sent to France.  After only one month he was severely injured and was brought to a hospital in Wiltshire, England, where two days later he died of his wounds.

William is buried at Maddington (St. Mary) Churchyard Extension, Wiltshire, England.

In Sabden he has not been remembered on either the school or church plaques.
