Francis was born and lived in Sabden with his parents, James and Ann in Padiham Road.  He attended the Wesleyan Church and Sunday School.  When he left school, Francis was employed by the Burnley Rural District Council.  In 1906 he married Amelia and the couple moved to 20 Hambledon View, Read, Lancashire. 

Francis attested under the ‘Lord Derby Scheme’ in December 1915, but was not called up until 24th October 1916.  Francis at first enlisted into the Cheshire Regiment but  after his training he was transferred to the South Lancashire Regiment before being sent out to France in June 1917.  Ten months later, Mrs Haken received a telegram informing her that Francis had been killed in action. 

Francis Luther Haken was buried at Vielle-Chapelle New Military Cemetery, Lacouture, Pas de Calais, France. 

In Sabden he has been remembered on both the School and Church Plaques.
