Joseph lived with his parents, Robert and Margaret Alice Frankland, one sister and two brothers (one of whom was later to die in the war) at number 10 Bury Row, Sabden.  As a child he had attended Sabden County School and St Nicholas Church and Sunday School.  Upon leaving school he began work as a weaver at Messrs Lockwood and Buckley’s, Union Mill, Sabden.  Joseph, who was over six feet tall was a suberb footballer and was attracting the attention of Burnley Football Club.

In May 1915 Joseph enlisted in the army and was sent out to Egypt. Six months later he was posted to the Arras region of France.

Mrs Frankland received official notice in late December 1916 that her son had received shrapnel wounds and had died from his injuries.

Joseph Frankland was laid to rest at Warlincourt Halte British Cemetery, Saulty, Pas de Calais, France.

In Sabden he has been remembered on both the School and Church Plaques.
