James lived with his brother and sister at their parents home in Bury-Row, Sabden.  They attended the catholic school and church.  

James enlisted into the army in 1915 at the age of seventeen.  He served through the Gallipoli Campaign coming through unscathed.  In 1916 he was transferred to Belgium and was wounded after only two weeks.  After spending four months in hospita,l James returned to the western front, this time in France .  

In 1918 during the Germans advance, James was wounded and severely gassed.  He was shipped back to England and spent twelve months in a military hospital in the South of England.  James was transferred to the Queen Mary Military Hospital , Whalley (now known as Calderstones), where he was regularly visited by his friends and relatives from Sabden.  

James never recovered from the effects of being gassed and it was due to this that he passed away at the age of 21.  

James Ferrie is buried at the St Nicholas Churchyard, Sabden.  

In Sabden he has been remembered on the Church Plaque.
