When Fred was eleven years old his father Samuel Cook, who worked for the Sabden Printing Company, secured a job as a manager of a print works in Caixa, Pernambuco, Brazil; in 1901 the family emigrated to Brazil.

On hearing of the outbreak of hostilities, Fred immediately returned to his Grandparents' home in Sabden and enlisted in the Coldstream Guards.  After three months of training Fred's Regiment embarked for France and upon arrival were at once despatched to the Aisne Region, where they were to try and hold back the German Advance.

Nine weeks later Fred's family in Sabden received the news that he had been killed in action in only his second week in the line.

Fred Cook is buried in the Vendresse British Cemetery, Aisne, France. 

In Sabden he has been remembered on both the School and Church Plaques.
