John was born at Cockshutt Farm, Sabden where he lived with his parents Giles and Martha and four older brothers.  The children attended Sabden County School and regularly attended St Nicholas Church and Sunday School.  After leaving school, John began work on his parents' farm. 

He enlisted in the army on 9th August 1916 and after six months training, John was sent out to the Somme region of France.  He was at the front line almost continuously seeing much action. 

On the 13th August 1918 John was severely wounded and taken to the 5th Casualty Clearing Station at Daours.  Four days later John died from his wounds. 

John Collinge is buried at Daours Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France. 

In Sabden he has been remembered on both the School and Church Plaques.
