Harry Baron

Age 31        Married with 2 children

Private 38792
1st Bn., East Lancashire Regiment

Died of wounds on
Sunday 30th June 1918

Harry was born in Sabden and lived along with his parents and two brothers in Clitheroe Road, Sabden.  The family were keen Wesleyans, regularly attending both the Church and Sunday School.  Whilst Harry was in his early teens, his father who was a Police Constable was promoted to Sergeant in the Accrington Police Force and the family moved from Sabden to live at Bold Street, Accrington.

After leaving school Harry went to work at Scaitcliffe Colliery.  He was also a Sunday School Teacher at the Cambridge Street Wesleyan Church, Accrington where he met his future wife, Florrie, who was a teacher.  The couple lived at 14 Cedar Street, Accrington and had two children together.

Harry was the last of his brothers to enlist in the army, joining in August 1917 and going out to France in January 1918.  In late June Harry learnt that his elder brother William’s regiment was stationed in a nearby town and he was able to visit him and they spent the day together.  The next day as Harry was returning to the trenches, he was severely wounded by shrapnel and died the following day in a Military Hospital.

Harry Baron is buried at the Aire Communal Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France.

In Sabden he has not been remembered on either of the School or Church Plaques.
