When Richard enlisted into the army in Darwen, Lancashire he gave amongst his details that had been born in Sabden, Lancashire.

Richard died from wounds at the 44th Casualty Clearing Station, Poperinghe. 

Richard Atkinson was buried in the Nine Elms British Cemetery, Poperinghe, Poperinge, West Vlaanderen, Belgium. 

In Sabden he has not been remembered on either the School or Church Plaques.
