John was born in Blackburn and moved to Sabden when still only a child to live with his uncle, Mr R W Shaw, after his parents died.  At the age of sixteen, John enlisted in the army and served for twenty years including eight years in India and six in South Africa.

John was in France at the outbreak of the war and was recommended for the Distinguished Service Medal for his actions during the Battle of Mons.  He declined the medal but accepted his promotion to Quartermaster Sergeant.

In mid June his wife learnt that he had been killed in action in the Ypres Region of Belgium.

John has no known grave and is remembered on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial , Ieper, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. 

In Sabden he has not been remembered on either the School or Church Plaques.
