SABDEN

Was formed into a separate township on April 1st, 1904 It comprises portions of Pendleton, Read, Wiswell, Northtown, Higham, Goldshaw,
and the whole of Heyhouses. It is situated six miles from Burnley,
four miles from Clitheroe, and ten miles from Blackburn, and covers an

area of 2,255 acres.  It has a population of 1,550 persons, and its rate-
able value is £6,768.  It is in the parliamentary division of Clitheroe
and county council divisions of Whalley and Barrowford, and is governed
by a parish council, consisting of nine members.  The Church, dedi-

cated to St. Nicholas, was built in 1846.  A chancel was added in 1880,
at a cost of £600, erected by Mrs. Starkie, of Radcliffe, in memory of
the late Le Gendre Nicholas Starkie, Esq.  A new organ, costing £370,
was presented by a gentleman resident in the village.  A handsome
clock was placed in the tower in 1901, at a cost of £120, raised by
public subscription, to the memory of the late vicar, Rev. Thomas
Lowe.  The benefice is a vicarage, of the annual value of £200, in the
patronage of E. A. Le Gendre Starkie, Esq., and held by the Rev.
Alfred E. Boden, M.A.  The Wesleyan Methodists have a neat Chapel,
erected in 1879, at a cost of £2,000, the principal donor being Robert

Hindle, Esq.   The Baptists have also a Chapel here.  The Roman

Catholic
School-Chapel, opened in 1887, is dedicated to St. Mary.  The

clergy of Clitheroe have charge of the Mission.  At Sabden is the
reservoir, constructed in 1891, belonging to the Padiham Urban District
Council, and which is capable of containing 120,000,000 gallons of
water.

PARISH COUNCIL.—Thos. Edmondson (chairman), Rev. Alfred E. Boden, George
